Software and Technology Evaluation and Selection

The selection of business software in Latvia is fairly broad on the one hand, but very limited on the other. So, for instance, business management (ERP) systems range from the very simple, offering only accounting functions (also known as niche systems) to the complex, providing the recording and management of all enterprise business processes in a single program. Each system has its advantages and drawbacks along with functions that they can or cannot provide. Even where several systems offer a single function, the key is in the nuances of their functionality and fit to the business specifics of a particular organization. It should be noted that a business management (ERP) system including all processes is not always required – sometimes, the best solution is a niche system for, e.g., warehouse management, production management, staff management etc.

We offer to help you prepare for the choice of a business management (ERP) or a niche system, and to prepare an overview of systems available in the Latvian and international market along with a recommendation on which system is the best match for your specific organization and requirements. This process is usually done together with supplier selection, where suppliers themselves will explain each system and their capabilities. Keep in mind that each supplier has already carried out development in a particular field of business for other clients – this should be accounted for when selecting a system.

It is also important to note that the choice of software is closely related to a particular supplier’s ability to develop and properly implement it. There are thousands of software development service providers in Latvia, and tens of ERP software suppliers and implementers. Choosing the most reliable and competent supplier with the best price performance is important.

By using our expertise in navigating the IT market, working with suppliers and clients and drafting agreements, we can help you:

  • prepare the required documentation to publish an official or unofficial tender;
  • organize supplier presentations and interviews;
  • develop supplier evaluation criteria (where necessary);
  • evaluate the quality, capacity and reliability of suppliers both during interviews and through the use of our contacts in the IT market;
  • draft a reasonable and safe cooperation/supply agreement with the chosen supplier.

This process is an important condition for a successful project. An ill-suited supplier and agreement is guaranteed to cause considerable issues in the project. The Latvian market is fairly small, and most suppliers in a particular field are known. If a supplier is unknown, it is important to get to know them before starting cooperation. Every supplier has objective strengths and weaknesses, making each of them the perfect partner in some, but definitely not all, projects. The impression that the market leader is always the best fit is also a false one. For certain fields and cooperation models, small suppliers will often be much more productive than market leaders.

In cases where a particular ready-made system is chosen which is offered by several suppliers, it is important to keep in mind that every supplier has unique experience and their own customizations (extensions) to the system. For example, one supplier might be specialized in banking, and another – in printing and publishing. This means that each of them will have developed know-how and customizations for their field of specialization.
